1998 ~ So many athletes

The 1998 year started with the Hamlin Bobcats knocking off the Harts Lions, 67-66, in overtime. With the score tied at 66-66, Josh Miller sank one of two free throws to give the Bobcats the win. The girls game was close, also, as Danielle Salmons led the Bobcats to victory with 15 points and Katherine Myers had 10. Amy Watts led Harts with 10 10 points. 

Te Bobcats also won over the Wildcats, 66-57. In junior high action, GV dropped Hamlin girls, 40-12. Samantha Burns led GV with eight and K. Adkins and Megan Davis added seven each. Laura Madden led Hamlin with four points.

On the boys contest, GV won, 45-43, as Zack Mullins tuned up his shooting eye with 15 points and Clifford Vance added eight and Joey Maynard 11. Walt McGrady led Hamlin with 13 and Atkins put in 11.

The Hamlin Bobcat boys are rated #10 and the girls #12. Harts boys are #10 and the girls #15.

Harts knocked off Duval, 68-28. Justin Harless had 17 and Joe Maynard 13. Louri had seven and Larry Angel 11. 

The Lady Bobcats swept #11 Harts. The #9 Bobcats clawed the Lions again. David Walls poured in 28 points and Josh Miller had 32 and J. R. Shull 18. Vance had 21, Thompson 16 and Tomblin 18.

Duval knocks off GV, 54-42, as Skaggs put in 19 and McGue 13. Cook led GV with 15 points and Toppins added five.

The GV freshman team defeated Duval, 65-23, as Thurman Maynard, Zack Mullins and Brett Hudson put up 13 points each. Michael Browning led Duval with 10.

The Bobcats climbed to #6 ranking and captured the Lincoln County crown over GV. Mike Quintrell had 17, David Walls 11, Josh Miller 13 and Jeff Triplett 13. Jared Blankenship and John Sanders led GV.

The Harts Lady Lions moved up to #9 and finished as runner-up in the Cardinal conference. The Hamlin girls won the sectional over the Wildcats and Yellow Jackets. Harts won over Van and Sherman. 

The GV boys win the Boone-Lincoln Conference title over Chapmanville. Mullins led with 15 and Maynard 17. 

The Lady Bobcats lose to Vinson in the Regionals. Harts fell to Burch in the Regionals, also.

On the boys side, Ceredo-Kenova puts away the Bobcats and Harts drops to Burch.

The All-County girls squad were: Amanda Skaggs, Ginny Boggess, Brandy Moore, Missy Cook, Candace Adkins, Cindy McGue, Danielle Salmons, Mimi Toney, Mandy Kovach and Tiffany Morris.

The All-County boys were: Josh Miller, David Walls, Brad Vance, J. R. Shull, Jared Blankenship, Adam Vance, Josh McCoy, Tony Bird, Mike Tomblin, Mike Quintrell, William Thompson and Cory Beck; yes, Cory Beck.

Jeremy Turley was the State Silver Gloves champ at 95 pounds. There were eight All-State girls named with Ginny Boggess, Amy Watts, Amanda Skaggs, Cindy McCGue, Candace Adkins, Mandy Kovach and Mimi Toney. Ginny Boggess scored her 1,000th point. Danielle Salmons starts the softball season by getting 19 Ks against Duval.

The Wildcat baseball team jumped out to a 5-1 start. Harts softball is #2 and GV #4. Gabe McKinney stars for the Yellow Jackets. J. R. Adkins is the star of the Lincoln County baseball tournament.

The Wildcats jump out to an 8-3 record and the Lincoln County title. Guyan Valley girls knock off Harts girls, 13-9. Getting the hits were Kristy Chapman, Michelle Pritchard, Kelena Baker and Jerica Lawson for GV. Harts was led by Teah Dingess, Bridgette Eldridge and Tara Browning. Harts is now ranked #2, GV #4 and Hamlin #12.

The Lady Wildcats won the sectional by beating Hamlin and Duval. Jason Clay and Cory Beck sign with Concord for the boys and Kelena Baker for the girls. Missy Cook signs at Tech for basketball.

SPORTS 100

The Duval boys beat #10 GV for the Sectional title in baseball as Aaron Graley, Ryan Caudill and Patrick Adkins shine. Harts fell to Sherman in the Sectional. Duval fell to Wahama in the Regionals and the Harts girls fall to Vinson in the Regionals.

Rodney Plumley is hired as the Duval HS boys basketball coach. Making All-State baseball were: Brant Gibson, Josh Duncan, Pat Atkins, Jared Yeager, Gabe McKinney and J. R. Adkins.

In softball, it was Laura Watts, Teah Dingess, Danielle Salmons and Missy Cook. Patrick Atkins is chosen for the N-S baseball game. Hamlin basketball camp has Wesley Burns, Brittany Dean and Tyler Simpkins as the stars.

Softball All-County is Brandy Moore, Candace Farley, Teah Dingess, Tara Browning, Valarie Pritchard, Jennifer Vickers, Missy Cook, Mechelle Breedlove and Laura Watts.

All-County baseball is Gabe McKinney, Josh Duncan, J. R. Adkins, B. J. Fleming, Patrick Atkins, Shawn Smith, Jose Clay, Shawn Miller and Brant Gibson.

The school employees golf outing was won by Jason Williams, John Wallace and Jeff Huffman, tying Golden Adkins, Bets Gryzb, Paul Adkins and David Adkins.

The Lincoln Open had over 40 golfers with the senior division going to Charlie Chapman, David Burch and Jack Stevens. Bill Clay, Duane Hunting and Butch Burns took the regular tournament.

Stowers & Sons beat Farons for the Lincoln County softball title and finished for a 14-1 season. John Winters, Jeff Lucas, A. J. Johnson, Glenn Frazier and Paul B. Isaacs. For Farons, it was Tucker Sanders, Greg Johnson, Hungry Sanders and Jeremy Brunty.

Olive Hager goes to the Senior Olympic Nationals in Orlando for tennis doubles with Dot Hicks.

Golden Adkins became boys basketball coach at GV. Morgan Mullins goes to the National 12-Under softball tourament in Alabama with an All-Star team.

In football, it was Hamlin ranked #7, but GV prevailed, 14-6. J. R. Adkins passes to Ryan Pennington for a 6-0 lead and then hits Joe Workman for an 8-0 advantage. Walt McGrady tried to lead the comeback with a TD pass of 47 yards to Shawn Porter. Jose Clay sealed the win with a 30-yard gallop. Luke Martin plays football at Guilford College.

Guyan Valley trounced Duval, 39-6, as J. R. Adkins was 6-11 for 145-yards passing.

The 1998 football Hall of Fame added members Eddie Dailey, Tim Rockel, Jimbo Smith, Aaron Hoover, Guy Browning, Dempsey Cummings, Bill Elkins, Merle Lucas, Haskell Holley, Farley Lovejoy, Bill Hoover, Bill Adkins, Jerry Duncan, John Rusk, James Johnston, Jessie Johnston, Jim Roberts, Tim McClure, Paul Harless and Paul B. Isaacs.

Back to football, Hamlin boots Duval, 52-0, as Travis Pritchard leads the defensive shutout. David Walls accounted for four TD and 181 yards rushing. Brandon Enochs and Shawn Porter also scored for the Bobcats. The Bobcats are 7-3 and earn the playoffs but lose to Cameron, 28-7 and Coach John Shimp steps down as the Bobcat mentor. GV made the playoffs and lost to Parkersburg Catholic, 37-16.

Making All-County football were J. R. Adkins, Jose Clay, David Walls, Seth Walls, Travis Pritchard, Jeremy Adkins, Josh Duncan, Brandon Enochs, Aaron Sigmon, Bobby Stickler, Shawn Porter, Ryan Pennington, Joe Workman, Jeb Atkins, Freddie Watts and Gabe McKinney.

All-State went to Travis Pritchard, Brant Gibson, Joe Workman, Ryan Pennington, Josh McCoy and Bobby Stickler.

Chad Pennington led Marshall to the Motor City Bowl Championship.
